Search results for "career mode locked" mostly come from the demo era, when players expected a full career in a build that was only meant to teach the combat. In the Early Access release there is no unlock requirement: Career is on the main menu from the first launch.

The demo was explicitly a combat sample. Its purpose was to teach slipping, counters and the punch set, and to let you try the roster. A career was never gated behind progress in it, which is why no amount of demo play unlocked one.
If you own the game and still see no Career
Work through these in order:
- Update the game. Two hotfixes shipped within 48 hours of launch (10.22 and 10.23). Verify files in Steam: right-click the game, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity.
- Finish or skip the tutorial. The first-launch flow pushes you into an in-ring tutorial. Some players read the "tutorial" card as the whole game and never return to the main menu. Back out to the menu and Career is there.
- Check your profile. Career progress is stored per save slot. If you deleted the slot that held the onboarding flag, start a new career rather than looking for a toggle.
- Controller versus keyboard prompts. On a gamepad the menu confirm and back buttons can look like the same button if you are used to a different layout; make sure you are not stuck on a submenu.
- Cloud conflict. The save system now keeps automatic backups. If a cloud sync replaced a local save, restore from the backup rather than starting over.
Does career mode need an internet connection?
No. Career is single-player and offline. Only cloud saves, and any future online features, need a connection.
Can you unlock career parts separately?
No. There is no "career mode DLC" and no progression gate on the mode itself. What you unlock inside a career is different: rankings, title shots, black market access and rival fights are all earned in-run.

If you are on console or mobile

Still stuck
If Career is missing on a verified Early Access install with the latest hotfix, it is a bug rather than a lock. Report it on the Steam hub with your build number and whether you are on Windows or Mac, and check the update history for a fix in the next patch.
Why the menu looks locked
If career mode appears unavailable, it is almost always one of these four things rather than an actual lock.
You are on the main menu tab, not the career tab. The mode selector and the career entry are separate screens; the career tab is the one that starts a new fighter.
You have an unfinished career save. The game keeps one active career at a time. Retire or delete the old one before starting a new fighter.
The demo is installed. A demo build can sit next to the full game on the same account; launching the demo shows a restricted menu.
The build is mid-patch. Steam updates replace files while the game is closed; a partially updated install can show an incomplete menu. Verify the game files.
None of these require an unlock, a purchase or a progress gate. There is no career mode that opens after you finish a tutorial.
